A DAY OF JOY, CONNECTION & LIGHT 

There are weddings you photograph, and there are days you live. Imogen and Ed’s wedding at Gildings Barns was one of those days: full of laughter, emotional moments, and light that seemed to breathe life into every frame.

Nestled in the Surrey Hills, Gildings Barns provides a stunning backdrop of oak beams, exposed brick, and sweeping countryside views. Licensed for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies and offering exclusive use of several interconnected barns, the venue offers flexibility and charm in equal measure.

Morning: Calm, Anticipation & Connection

The day began just outside the venue, in a beautiful Airbnb only fifteen minutes away. Imogen and her five bridesmaids prepared together in the calm of early daylight. I often believe that the morning moments, the quiet laughter, the adjusting of dresses, the shared nervous smiles are some of the richest to capture.

In those hours, I photographed bridal details: Imogen’s Justine Alexander gown from Everleigh Bridal, Maida Vale, subtle bridal accessories, and the soft bouquets, with blooms sourced from New Common Garden Market. The dresses, the florals, even the light, they all whispered elegance.

Meanwhile, Louise Ford (@louisealexanderhair) worked on hair styling, and Philippa Mile (@phillymakeup) created soft, glowing make-up looks. These moments, hairpins being placed, a brush over cheekbones, a bridesmaid adjusting a strap are the connective tissue of the morning.

Arrival, Ceremony & Emotion

By early afternoon, the energy shifted. I made my way to Gildings Barns and was welcomed by Ed and his groomsmen in sharp in Hawes & Curtis suits, greeting guests as they arrived. The barn doors opened, and the space readied itself for ceremony: wood, stone, beams, and all that natural texture.

Inside the main barn, Imogen walked down the aisle with her father. They enlisted a young ring bearer, Imogen’s bridesmaid son, who delivered the rings with confidence and grace. There were three heartfelt readings (from siblings and parents), culminating in the first kiss under the warm oak roof.

Then came the joyful explosion: confetti flew, cheers rose, and guests spilled outside for the confetti walk. We captured a large group photo, then individual groupings consisting of  bridesmaids, groomsmen and a tender portrait of the couple with their grandparents. These are the images that future generations will return to.

Wedding Breakfast, Speeches & Evening

The crowd reassembled in the barn for the wedding breakfast, catered by The Wheeler Estate. The speeches unfolded between courses: first, Imogen’s father, then the groom, then the best men. Emotions were raw, laughter generous, and tears quiet.

As plates were cleared, the stage was set for Technicolor Band (@technicolorband) to bring the evening to life. With the first song, the dance floor opened. Meanwhile, Imogen’s bouquet was thrown, and the night unfolded with movement, music and joy.

Throughout, I kept behind the scenes: capturing candid moments, dancing silhouettes, and eyes closed in ecstasy.

Reflections on Their Day & What Made It Special

What struck me most about Imogen & Ed’s wedding was how intentionally they curated moments for people. Not only did they give space for a bridesmaid photo in robes or pyjamas, but they also ensured there were portraits of bride with each bridesmaid, and quiet in-between moments. Those are images that hold emotional weight when years go by.
