Preparing for your wedding photography

Preparing For your Wedding Day Let’s get you prepped for your wedding day—confidently, elegantly, and beautifully.  Decide if you want your photos to show how your wedding LOOKED or FELT? Whilst very wedding can look beautiful in pictures, decide if you want to capture the feeling or the look of the day? The difference is visible in the way it is captured, as in feeling comes through from movement, for the more “I was there and this is how it was”. Compared to the equally aesthetically beautiful way that it can be photographed to show the details and less of the experience. LET ME KNOW YOUR PREFERENCE or if you would like a combination.  Try not to relax your face during the ceremony  I don’t mean this horribly, however if you were to ‘Zone Out’ you may looked glazed over. Rather than this, try and maintain your smile with your eyes. Nobody likes a resting bitch face, and if you only notice this in your photographs it is too late! Stay Close During the day and photos especially, stay close to one another. During the ceremony be close enough to comfortably hold hands and not have to stretch.  Getting out of a car If you are planning to arrive to your wedding in a beautiful wedding car or taxi be sure to get out SLOWLY. This will allow time for your driver or whoever is opening your door to get out the way of your arrival photos. Alternatively, if your father or bridesmaid is opening the door it will give them time to position. Try and be elegant, use one fluid movement and the look around when you are out. Perfect!! Think about your exit When exiting your ceremony think about how you want to look. Energetic, excited, relaxed or even relieved. Know in advance if you will be looking for high-fives, punch the air, or if you’re planning a kiss half way down the aisle, or even if you just want to get out. Try and remember to walk instep with each other and nice and slowly. This will allow you to take it all in and get great photographs.  Plan for me to move to the back If you are booking me to shoot alone (no second shooter) try to accommodate me to move to the back of the room for a short period during your ceremony so that we can get a variety of images. This will possibly rely on the registrar/vicar allowing for this too but you will thank me for suggesting it.  Table layout and Speeches When putting together your table plan be sure to put you and your partner NEXT to each other rather than opposite, across the table. This way I can be sure to capture your reactions to speeches together rather than only one of you. Also, I will be able to capture candid moments you have together organically throughout and after dinner.  Never think square on unless prompted Whenever you are doing your portraits, either couple shots or group photos, remember to NEVER stand front on to the camera. This always gives ‘football wall’ vibes and doesn’t look quite as comfortable with others around you. Just a small twist makes all the difference. If I have an image in mind that I want you to look at me for I will let you know to be camera facing.  Laugh & hug Laughs and hugs are the best way of natural touch points. It is the best way or outwardly showing affection without kissing or being overly affectionate.  Think editorial If you are looking for a more editorial style of imagery, think editorial. By this I mean think how the difference between Vogue/Tatler alongside casual snaps appear differently. Think a little more structure and composed, attitude, with a cohesive visual narrative. Using Pinterest and instagram boards is the best way to collect and share your vision with me. Whist I will photograph through the moments, you may want to do a few pictures which are a little more directed and stylised.  Keep moving (slowly) unless busy During your photographs, if you are able to continually keep moving this will elevate your photos and allow me to capture a series of images that are different. This also will help with videographers, as the movement with show better in video, rather than you rigid like a monument.   Hold your dress when moving and cross ankles when still When ever you are walking you will want to lift your dress to keep it clean. When doing this, before you leave the place of preparation (home/hotel etc) have a look in the mirror at where is best to hold it from. Whist every dress has its own “loop” do NOT use this to walk along with your dress during the day. You will hide the beautiful detail in your dress, instead, pinch the dress and pull up an inch or so. Every pinch will also look different. Also, when you are stood still, try and remember to cross your ankles – it will help to shift weight onto your hips and relax your stance. Sunglasses If you are getting married mid Spring/Summer don’t forget to bring your sunglasses. We may use them for style points, or you may just decide that you want them for the afternoon reception anyway. Sunglasses are way cooler than squinting! Shoulders back – Posture Try and remember to keep your shoulders back when you are stood still. During the ceremony, during the drinks reception, whenever you aren’t moving. It will elevate your posture and make you look naturally more elegant.    EXTRA ADVISE Bridal Prep tips You’ve invested in that once-in-a-lifetime gown, perhaps more than you ever imagined. It deserves to be treated with care. Avoid crumpling or squeezing it into a tight space after it’s been stored perfectly for months. Choose a prep location with thoughtful planning, clear, spacious, and photogenic rather than scrambling in cramped, unflattering corners.

Expectations of a Wedding Photographer

wedding photographer capturing the signing of the register

What to Expect from a Documentary Wedding Photography A documentary wedding photography session is different from traditional wedding photography in many ways. Here’s what you can expect from a documentary wedding photography session: The photographer will not direct or pose you or your guests. Unlike traditional wedding photographers who often direct and pose the couple and their guests, a documentary wedding photographer will not interfere with the natural flow of the day. They will observe and capture candid moments as they unfold naturally, creating images that are authentic and genuine. The photographer will aim to tell a story through images and create a visual narrative of the wedding day. Rather than just capturing individual moments, the photographer will focus on capturing the emotion and the essence of the wedding day. The resulting images will create a cohesive story that reflects the personalities and style of the couple. The photographer will be unobtrusive and will not interfere with the flow of the wedding day. They will blend in with the guests and capture natural moments without being noticed. This allows the couple and their guests to relax and enjoy the day without feeling self-conscious or under pressure. The photographer will capture a wide range of moments, from the preparation before the ceremony to the reception and everything in between. This includes the small moments that are often overlooked, such as the reactions of the guests during the ceremony, the interactions between the couple and their loved ones, and the emotions of the day. The photographer may also take some traditional portraits of the couple and their families, but these will be done in a natural and unobtrusive way. The portraits will be candid and will capture the personality and essence of the subjects. The photographer will edit the images to create a cohesive story and deliver the final images in a digital format. The final images will be edited to ensure that they tell a cohesive story and reflect the style of the couple. The images will be delivered in a digital format, allowing the couple to easily share and print their images. – An observational and unobtrusive approach to photographing a wedding. Examples of Documentary Wedding Photography Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing candid and natural moments that tell the story of the wedding day. Here are some examples of documentary wedding photography that illustrate this style: A bride getting ready with her bridesmaids, captured in a natural and candid way. This type of image might show the bride in the midst of the preparations, surrounded by her friends and family. The image might be taken from a distance, capturing the moment as it happens without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a candid and authentic representation of this moment. The groom’s emotional reaction as he sees his bride walking down the aisle. This type of image might show the groom with tears in his eyes as he sees his bride for the first time. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the raw emotion of the moment without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a powerful and emotional representation of this moment. Guests laughing and dancing at the reception, captured in a spontaneous and natural way. This type of image might show guests enjoying themselves on the dance floor or laughing and chatting at their tables. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the natural interactions and emotions of the guests without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a fun and lively representation of the reception. The couple’s first kiss as husband and wife, captured in a candid and unposed way. This type of image might show the couple sharing their first kiss as husband and wife. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the moment as it happens without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a romantic and authentic representation of this moment. What makes documentary wedding photography different from Traditional Wedding Photography? Documentary wedding photography is a style of photography that is different from traditional wedding photography in several ways. Here are some of the main differences between the two styles: Approach: Documentary wedding photography takes a more unobtrusive and natural approach to capturing the wedding day. The photographer acts as an observer, capturing candid moments and emotions as they happen naturally. On the other hand, traditional wedding photography is more directed and posed. The photographer may ask the couple and their guests to pose in certain ways to get the perfect shot. Moments: Documentary wedding photography focuses on capturing candid moments and emotions, while traditional wedding photography focuses on posed portraits. The documentary photographer will capture the natural interactions and expressions of the couple and their guests throughout the day, creating a visual story of the wedding day. Traditional wedding photography, on the other hand, will focus on posed portraits of the couple, their families, and the wedding party. Storytelling: Documentary wedding photography tells a story through images, while traditional wedding photography captures individual moments. The documentary photographer will capture a series of images that tell the story of the wedding day from start to finish. The images will be edited and presented in a way that creates a cohesive and meaningful narrative of the day. Traditional wedding photography, on the other hand, captures individual moments that are not necessarily linked together in a story. Documentary wedding photography is a unique and authentic way to capture the essence of a wedding day. It takes a more natural and unobtrusive approach, captures candid moments and emotions, and tells a story through images. In contrast, traditional wedding photography is more directed and posed, focuses on individual moments, and does not necessarily tell a story through the images. What is Documentary Wedding Photography

Documentary Wedding Photography: Capturing Authentic Moments That Last a Lifetime Wedding photography is an art that requires skill, experience, and creativity to capture the beauty and essence of one of the most important days of a couple’s life. While there are different styles of wedding photography, documentary wedding photography is gaining popularity among couples who want their special day to be captured in a natural and unobtrusive way. In this article, we will explore what documentary wedding photography is, its benefits, how to find a documentary wedding photographer, and what to expect from a documentary wedding photography session. What is Documentary Wedding Photography? Documentary wedding photography is a type of photography that is becoming increasingly popular for modern-day couples. This style of photography is all about capturing natural moments and emotions as they happen during the wedding day. The goal of a documentary wedding photographer is to tell a story through their images, creating a visual narrative that reflects the true essence of the couple and their wedding day. Documentary wedding photography is often referred to as photojournalistic wedding photography because it shares many similarities with traditional photojournalism. Like a photojournalist, a documentary wedding photographer is an observer, who does not interfere or direct events. They aim to capture the emotions, expressions, and interactions between the couple and their guests in a candid and unobtrusive way. Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often involves posing and directing the couple and their guests, documentary wedding photography is all about capturing the natural moments that happen during the day. A documentary wedding photographer will use their skills and experience to anticipate and capture these moments, creating images that reflect the true emotions and feelings of the day. One of the significant advantages of documentary wedding photography is that it produces images that feel authentic and real. Instead of stiff, posed photos, you’ll have a collection of images that tell a story and capture the essence of the day. Documentary wedding photographers often focus on the small details that are easily missed, such as the little glances and interactions between the couple and their guests, and the emotions that are often felt but not expressed.   Like a photojournalist, a documentary wedding photographer is an observer, who does not interfere or direct events The Benefits of Documentary Wedding Photography  The benefits of documentary wedding photography cannot be overstated. This style of photography offers numerous advantages over traditional wedding photography. Here are some of the most significant benefits of documentary wedding photography: Authenticity: Documentary wedding photography captures the real emotions and moments of the wedding day. The photographer documents the day as it unfolds naturally, without posing or directing the couple and their guests. This creates a genuine and honest representation of the couple and their special day. The images are not contrived or artificial, but rather a true reflection of the couple’s personalities and the emotions of the day. Unobtrusiveness: Documentary wedding photographers are not intrusive and do not interfere with the flow of the wedding day. They blend into the background and capture natural moments without directing or posing the couple and their guests. This allows the couple and their guests to relax and enjoy the day without feeling self-conscious or under pressure. Storytelling: Documentary wedding photography tells a story through images, creating a visual narrative of the wedding day that reflects the couple’s personality and style. The photographer captures the small details, emotions, and interactions that make each wedding unique. The images are not just a collection of random snapshots but a cohesive and meaningful story of the couple’s wedding day. Timelessness: Documentary wedding photography creates timeless images that can be cherished for generations to come. The images capture memories that will last a lifetime and can be passed down through the family. They are not just snapshots of the day but a lasting testament to the love and commitment of the couple. In summary, documentary wedding photography offers many benefits over traditional wedding photography. It captures the authenticity and naturalness of the wedding day, is unobtrusive and allows the couple and their guests to relax and enjoy the day, tells a story through images that reflect the couple’s personality and style, and creates timeless images that can be cherished for generations to come. If you want to capture the true essence of your wedding day, documentary wedding photography is the perfect choice. Is Documentary Wedding Photography For Me? If you are someone who values authenticity and wants to capture the true essence of your wedding day, then documentary wedding photography might be the perfect choice for you. This style of photography is all about capturing candid moments and emotions as they happen naturally, creating a visual narrative of the wedding day that reflects the personalities and style of the couple. If you want images that feel authentic and real, and that capture the small details and emotions of the day, then documentary wedding photography is the way to go. This style of photography is not about posing or directing, but about capturing natural moments in an unobtrusive way. Documentary wedding photography is also a great choice for couples who want a photographer who will blend in with the guests and not interfere with the flow of the day. This allows the couple and their guests to relax and enjoy the day without feeling self-conscious or under pressure. However, if you are someone who wants more traditional posed portraits, then documentary wedding photography may not be the right choice for you. This style of photography is all about capturing candid moments and emotions, so if you are looking for posed portraits, then traditional wedding photography may be a better option. If you value authenticity, want to capture the true essence of your wedding day, and prefer natural and unobtrusive photography, then documentary wedding photography is definitely worth considering. Unposed Wedding Photographer Leicester

Wedding Photography with no posing    So what is a wedding photography style which doesn’t pose? Unposed, documentary, storytelling, relaxed, or even simply in the moment. In this blog about wedding photography styles I will talk about what makes the style unique and also may appeal to you as the bride or groom. Being a documentary wedding photographer, the most valuable piece of kit that I have with me on a wedding day are my ears! The ability to have the awareness of what is going on all around me whist still maintaining focus on my current subject is invaluable.Documentary storytelling or ‘candid’ photography requires the awareness for everything that is happening in the room. A simple non stopping, no posing attitude ensures that every smile has a chance of being caught. Breaking down the labels/terms in this post will hopefully help you to decide if an unposed, documentary style is right for you on your wedding day.    MY BEST OF THE BEST DOCUMENTARY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN IN A NON POSED STYLE I have compiled a collection of my favourite images captured in a strong storytelling non posed I have taken over the past few years. My favourite are definitely the black and white collection, which work best for you? HOW DOES A STORYTELLING STYLE DIFFER FROM A FINE ART STYLE? What does a photogrpahers style tell you? What does the storytelling style offer over other methods and approaches? The photographers who work to a relaxed, documentary style love nothing more than to let the day flow and capture real moments of real life rather than structure and stage moments throughout your wedding day. It’s not about perfection, it’s about the realism.  Fine art photographers find the perfect light, and set up the perfect composition with a strong detail to posing and direction. This can be great if that what you love but also may be time consuming on a busy wedding day. Especially in the winter months with shorter days.  The main difference is that with a documentary photographer you are encouraged to forget about them. Allow yourself to get immersed in your wedding day and look forward to seeing the fun and excitement that your guests had around you.  Dance like you’ve never danced before. STORYTELLING IS KEY  So what works for you for your wedding collection? A selection of random pictures from your wedding day or a cohesive time collated collection of what actually happened. The story of who was there, what happened, who kissed who and who had the best dance moves?  Although the sounds very much like the documentary approach telling the story is more than the images. It depicts what is happening at the wedding, what order and where. The preparations, the ceremony, the celebration, the speeches, the food and the party. However, the stories within these stories are what documentary photographers pick up on. The relationships between family members, people meeting of the first time in decades and uncle Bob who has had one too many Sherry’s! This is integral to a documentary wedding photographers style and is far removed from the Fine Art photographers methods and practise.    PHOTOGRAPHING IN A SIGNATURE NON-POSED PORTRAIT STYLE  I use this as my ‘catch phrase’ and stand by this phrase to encompass everything I stand for. Many of my clients do say to me that they hate having their photograph taken but instantly feel relaxed and reassured when I ask them to find more than one image within my site and social channels when the the person/couple are looking into the camera.  This is because as I’m telling that story I manage to blend in with the guest sand capture the honest non-posed portraits which sell my style. It allows you to enjoy your day and have the best wedding ever without having a photographer in your face all day and you can enjoy your time with your guests and family! GREAT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS DON’T NEED TO BE POSED It’s true that great wedding photographs don’t need to be posed. Some beautiful images are created, built and stylised are undoubtably incredible pieces of art. Photo-journalists photographers are reliant on creating photographs that have a deeper meaning than what you see in the picture.  True emotion, reactions and expressions is what we look for. This is the only way that describes what happened, not what I wanted to happen.  DOCUMENT YOUR WEDDING DAY FOR SPECIAL MEMORIES When I was married many years ago we didn’t have a wedding photographer because we were so uncomfortable having our pictures taken. In hindsight, this was an awful mistake. So this then set me thinking, what about if I could be a photographer who blends in like any other guest. A candid, unposed storyteller for couples who didn’t want to spend the day posing for endless group pictures and could just enjoy the day like I wasn’t there.  So I slightly changed my approach, became more aware of how I could provide these special memories that could be treasured forever. Using natural light rather than flash or external light panels and embracing the light in the room to keep with the atmosphere on the day. In order to change my approach and become more unposed I needed to become more aware of my senses.  Observe more, listen more and photograph with both eyes open. This way I will be able to see things that are already happening in the room and not stop to pose anyone. This doesn’t mean that we don’t pose anything it means if mum asks for a picture with you then we can do this in a nice spot in the room or if you would like group shots then we can accommodate these too. When we talk about couples portraits, all I encourage brides and grooms to do is just spend some time alone together.  Go for a walk, enjoy each others company and let me document your love together.  This is exactly what documenting a day is all about. If

It was a beautiful moment, and one that I was honored to capture through my Fujifilm lens. The love and joy on their faces were palpable, and it was clear that they were meant to be together.  With a rush of excitement, the ceremony was underway, and it was truly a beautiful and heartfelt affair. The readings were a particular highlight, especially those delivered by the boys, which added a touch of humor and lightness to the occasion. Izzy & Sam // SACRED HEARTS CHURCH, KINGSCOTE BARN // – Izzy & Sam – The wedding of Izzy and Sam started at the brides family home, where she was having her bridal preparations along with her bridesmaids and mum. The house was superbly lit with large patio doors, leading into a nice relaxed garden where the boys started playing football to calm down. As the dresses were hanging in the window upstairs, the make-up was being applied, and the hair being finished, Izzy was becoming ever more excited as the time passed by. Accompanied by an ever so talented videographer (details to be updated) we worked so well together as a team to capture every little detail and a bit of make-up being applied before the dress went on and the big reveal to Dad before making our way to the church. The church was conveniently located a few hundred yards away from the house but also a few hundred yards away from the school where Izzy and Sam met all those years ago as teenagers.  The church and service itself was of catholic origin with huge importance on the religious side of the day, but also a lovely big church, allowing for multiple different angles and the ability to walk around the outside to capture everybody emotionally invested in the ceremony. We even had an amazing choir singing for us throughout the ceremony, and upon exiting the church.  We then made our way to the lovely Kingscote barn in Tetbury, where the bride and groom were received in the vintage car that they had hired for the day, straight into a confetti line, where confetti went absolutely everywhere, followed by canapés, and informal photographs on the lawn, before a handful of requested group shots. At approximately 4:30, the guests made their way in to the barn for their wedding breakfast followed by a very hungry bride and groom, bringing with them as much energy as you could imagine for their welcome into the barn. Speeches followed the wedding breakfast with Andy, Sam, Ed and Jo, making speeches to completely humiliate each other, and also share very fond memories of the bride as a child before the fire pits were lit outside and the room was turned around ready for the evening reception. As the party began on the first dance was done, Izzy and Sam knew that they were going to spend the rest of their life together. Why 4:30 – 5:30 – Q & A  Come and join us.  A bit about me and what I do. I am a wedding professional photographer. Now I know a lot of people think that they can be a wedding photographer because they have a phone or an actual camera but what makes me different is may approach and style. Having studied for many years in the photography field, HND level and Degree I was fortunate enough to be learning at the time of the digital switch over, meaning I’ve been around since the time it began! I specialise in weddings because I love to photograph people  and capture emotions and moments. These conditions are very transferable as conditions are always changing and depending on time of year, venue and time of day. From challenging light during the preparations to stunning soft church light, harsh side or back light during the reception to stunning golden hour portraits to the dance floor being able to keep the atmosphere whist capturing the detail of the dirty dancing and beyond.  So why is the workshop for you? Because you  have the passion to learn and develop (no pun intended) your skills or further your development. Or, you want to tweak, understand more or explore more about your photographic interest. From this course there will be the opportunity to purchase further learning material covering topics such as Lens choice Why consistency is key Promotions and promoting/Advertising  Presets Computers Filesize  Websites  Preparations for days Live shoot. Pennard House Wedding Photographer

Pennard House Wedding Photographer Anna & Toby Pennard House Wedding Photographer  SHEPERTON MALLET, SOMERSET This was my first visit EVER to Somerset and never have I been this close to a music royalty stage! Being so close to the incredible Glastonbury stage already had me hyped up about the vibe that Anna & Toby would bring, and I was not wrong.  With bridal preparations beginning mid-morning I had plenty of time to explore the building and the grounds, allowing me to visualise the plans that Anna & Toby had told me about in advance of their Somerset seeing day! The outdoor area set for the ceremony looked incredible in the side lit sunlight coming form over the house.  As I returned back to the preparations for Anna she had began her final touches for make up before reaching for her dress from the wardrobe. Once the dress and touch ups had been put-on and completed I then met with dad at the bottom of the curved stair case to await his excited and emotional response to seeing his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress.  The ceremony itself was a simple, formal event with the bride & groom surrounded by all of the people they love out on the lawn of Pennard House. Within 20 minutes, Anna and Goby were married and making their way back to the main lawn of the house for confetti and canapes. Shortly after a handful of group photographs everyone was invited to the loft of the barn for the incredible wedding breakfast and speeches from Toby, Anna, her dad and the best person.  The evening saw lots of dancing, a wood fired pizza truckling with a sizzling DJ playing all of the best tunes all night long!   To View Anna & Toby’s Gallery Click HERE Suppliers  Venue: Pennard House  Cake: Anna Cake Couture Dress designer: Savin Dress Boutique: Gillian Million Bridesmaid Dresses: Rewritten Shoes: Converse Suits: Reiss Rings: Jacqueline & Edward Hair: Liza Durrant Makeup: Leila Abedrabo Florist: Copper Green Flowers Band/DJ: Andy Tozer Catering: Pennard House We honestly had the BEST day and we’re so excited for the photos.  Hope you had a good drive back and speak soon.
