What to Expect from a Documentary Wedding Photography

A documentary wedding photography session is different from traditional wedding photography in many ways. Here’s what you can expect from a documentary wedding photography session:

The photographer will not direct or pose you or your guests. Unlike traditional wedding photographers who often direct and pose the couple and their guests, a documentary wedding photographer will not interfere with the natural flow of the day. They will observe and capture candid moments as they unfold naturally, creating images that are authentic and genuine.

The photographer will aim to tell a story through images and create a visual narrative of the wedding day. Rather than just capturing individual moments, the photographer will focus on capturing the emotion and the essence of the wedding day. The resulting images will create a cohesive story that reflects the personalities and style of the couple.

The photographer will be unobtrusive and will not interfere with the flow of the wedding day. They will blend in with the guests and capture natural moments without being noticed. This allows the couple and their guests to relax and enjoy the day without feeling self-conscious or under pressure.

The photographer will capture a wide range of moments, from the preparation before the ceremony to the reception and everything in between. This includes the small moments that are often overlooked, such as the reactions of the guests during the ceremony, the interactions between the couple and their loved ones, and the emotions of the day.

The photographer may also take some traditional portraits of the couple and their families, but these will be done in a natural and unobtrusive way. The portraits will be candid and will capture the personality and essence of the subjects.

The photographer will edit the images to create a cohesive story and deliver the final images in a digital format. The final images will be edited to ensure that they tell a cohesive story and reflect the style of the couple. The images will be delivered in a digital format, allowing the couple to easily share and print their images.

– An observational and unobtrusive approach to photographing a wedding.

Examples of Documentary Wedding Photography

Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing candid and natural moments that tell the story of the wedding day. Here are some examples of documentary wedding photography that illustrate this style:

A bride getting ready with her bridesmaids, captured in a natural and candid way. This type of image might show the bride in the midst of the preparations, surrounded by her friends and family. The image might be taken from a distance, capturing the moment as it happens without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a candid and authentic representation of this moment.

The groom’s emotional reaction as he sees his bride walking down the aisle. This type of image might show the groom with tears in his eyes as he sees his bride for the first time. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the raw emotion of the moment without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a powerful and emotional representation of this moment.

Guests laughing and dancing at the reception, captured in a spontaneous and natural way. This type of image might show guests enjoying themselves on the dance floor or laughing and chatting at their tables. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the natural interactions and emotions of the guests without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a fun and lively representation of the reception.

The couple’s first kiss as husband and wife, captured in a candid and unposed way. This type of image might show the couple sharing their first kiss as husband and wife. The image would be taken from a distance, capturing the moment as it happens without interfering with the scene. The resulting image would be a romantic and authentic representation of this moment.

What makes documentary wedding photography different from Traditional Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography is a style of photography that is different from traditional wedding photography in several ways. Here are some of the main differences between the two styles:

Approach: Documentary wedding photography takes a more unobtrusive and natural approach to capturing the wedding day. The photographer acts as an observer, capturing candid moments and emotions as they happen naturally. On the other hand, traditional wedding photography is more directed and posed. The photographer may ask the couple and their guests to pose in certain ways to get the perfect shot.

Moments: Documentary wedding photography focuses on capturing candid moments and emotions, while traditional wedding photography focuses on posed portraits. The documentary photographer will capture the natural interactions and expressions of the couple and their guests throughout the day, creating a visual story of the wedding day. Traditional wedding photography, on the other hand, will focus on posed portraits of the couple, their families, and the wedding party.

Storytelling: Documentary wedding photography tells a story through images, while traditional wedding photography captures individual moments. The documentary photographer will capture a series of images that tell the story of the wedding day from start to finish. The images will be edited and presented in a way that creates a cohesive and meaningful narrative of the day. Traditional wedding photography, on the other hand, captures individual moments that are not necessarily linked together in a story.

Documentary wedding photography is a unique and authentic way to capture the essence of a wedding day. It takes a more natural and unobtrusive approach, captures candid moments and emotions, and tells a story through images. In contrast, traditional wedding photography is more directed and posed, focuses on individual moments, and does not necessarily tell a story through the images.

Now this was a reception like no other I have ever attended. Hosted by the amazing Jackstar Weddings, Emma & Will chose to have a karaoke party for their reception which EVERYONE made the most of. Grandad was showing his best shapes whist the whole of the bridal party were singing. One to never be forgotten.
